Studios

I am moving to NY for the summer. Leaving Chicago for good, or at least the foreseeable future. Feeling kinda nostalgic about it and i ain’t even left yet. I’ve started packing my studio and it got me to thinking about all the various studios I’ve had in the last few years. Last 10 years or so. Here’s a greatest hits compilation.

This is at UT Austin. Probably around 2002 or 03′. I’m a big time Junk and image collector. I’ve gotten a lot better over the years but it’s still a problem. I really liked this place.

This was a spot I had across the street from Project Row Houses. The Groundskeeper Guy at PRH use to live here and when he moved out I snatched it up.It was a real hole in the wall. A true Shotgun shack and everything was falling apart. Bathroom leaked really bad. When it rained it looked like my walls were crying bloody tears. I the color came from all the soot and just delapedated wood. Still, I loved this place too. It was super cheap. $350 a month if I remember correctly. I had to actually move in here when I broke up with my girlfriend. I think I was here for a year, maybe two? Not sure.

Books and other reference stuff spread all out.

This a view from across the street. Probably standing  in Terry’s yard. Another PRH employee. Man, were deep in the tre’. In fact, Ray, the guy that used to cut the my grass lived around the corner. Really sad though, He died in the middle of the street around the corner from here one night.OD’d on something. I was really kinda messed up about it. He had borrowed like $3 from me the day before. I didn’t even know he hooked on anything. Apparently he had been clean for a long time then went on some sort of binge or something.  This was a crazy part of the tre’. One night, around midnight, I heard this knock at the door. I come out to see who it is, and and there’s some guy and some little kid who’s maybe about 12yrs old. The guy says ” Where’s my scooter?!” “I parked my scooter behind your house and now its gone, I just want my scooter back man!” I had no idea what he was talking about. He eventually gave up and kicked rocks but that was weird.

Now, this place was awesome. Not the studio but the apt. Two bedrooms, Central air big ass rooms. Man, I was CHILLIN! I used the dinning room as a studio, which in this photo, has been converted into a recording booth. Oh you aint know? I make beats too.

This was the front of the duplex. M’kina blockin the view. She think she all that.

This was my first place here in Chicago. It’s in Rogers Park 2005 West Jarvis # 1?two bedrooms but a lot smaller than my previous place. In a giant lonely brick complex. I think if you go to the start of this blog you can see some early images. You may also notice my setup is getting a lot less cluttered.

I went to Camp Kippy last summer in Maine. That was such a great trip. Hope I can go back one day. I was there for about two weeks and they gave me a HUGE studio to work in. I only did one drawing though.

And, back to the present. My current studio. Kinda anxious to get outta here though. I’m actually tired of this type of living. Missing the solitude of the south. there are so many people in this building but I don’t know any of ‘em not even the woman who lives right next door. Thats played out.
